DIVA FINAL REPORT

\\\ VIVO ///

with Kika Throne

Did you have a transformative experience over the internship?

how you may have changed since starting the internship?

Yes, I have gained a transformative experience over the internship. Since this is my very first internship, I value every lesson that I can take from this experience. Working with VIVO has given me many advantages that I consider extremely useful for my future career. The most important thing that I have learned is developing good communication skills with co-workers. Co-workers are like teammates and they are very helpful people to collaborate in a big project. Without the help from them, huge accomplishments cannot be made alone. When I got accepted by VIVO, I have met many talented people and I learned that if I want to building good communication is very useful As time went on, I have noticed myself becoming more collaborative and talkative with others instead of staying independent. This is a huge change that I have discovered in myself from this internship.

how you may use the skills that you’ve learned in the future?

Communication is one of the most essential skills that I have gained through this internship. I learned that by actively engaging with the organization leader can be very useful for accomplishing many things (ex, projects … etc). I should not be afraid to ask questions about projects or else it might result in miscommunication. Also, other skills such as photo editing and professional design can be useful for my future as well. For example, selecting the right typography on a graphic image is very important. Moreover, because of the mistake that I have made (printing the wrong design), I learned my lesson to always carefully recheck anything before gets published.

do you have goals for continuing with the internship? was there an on-going relationship that was developed?

have you developed a network of contacts that will benefit your practice?

Yes, I am very glad that I worked for VIVO and hopefully I can continue work for VIVO in the near future. I have talked to Kika about continuing the internship and she is delighted to have me around. I also developed a network of contacts. The artist that I have designed the invitation card for Signal & Noise is a major festival for VIVO and there is a possibility that I would likely to continue my internship. In addition, because of this intern, I have developed a closer network with my classmates.

comment on the working relationship with the organization, working in a collaborative environment,

the organization’s flexibility, the organization’s communication about the projects

I believe that I have a good working relationship with the organization. I enjoyed working for them. However, the organization flexibility and communication was not perfect. Emails were replied at a late speed but Kika is very nice to talk to and I understand she is extremely busy. I am happy working with her.

how your expectations of the internship changed over time? (what you ended up actually doing vs. what was initially proposed.)

I expected myself to be very busy handling projects from the organization since I have given myself many goals to accomplish. However, I discovered that working with VIVO is very relaxing and flexible. I learned that I should not be expecting so much, what is learned and observed is more important.

Marten Barkman, Remote Sensibility: Binocular Sensing

Marten Barkman’s presentation was very motivating and I enjoyed the presentation.  His ideology of nature and its relationship to our society is very motivating. During the beginning of his presentation, Barkman did a introduction of what he was going to say and what his interests are.  As his screening begins, a documentary video was suppose to be played. However, the whole process went through a little technical troubleshooting which may have shorten amount of time for his show. In the documentary, there were many stereostropic images based on landscapes. The background music was also very pleasing to hear. Two questions were raised during the documentary which left a strong impression in my mind through the whole presentation. What is Human Nature? What is our relationship with Nature?

What is our relationship with nature was one of the main theme Marten Barkman brought up. This theme encouraged me to extend my thoughts about human vs. nature. During the presentation, he showed many photos that he took during his stay in Yukon. A lot of photos were landscapes and nature related objects (ex. bugs, flowers, …etc). The photos were visually beautiful and gave me a very calming feel. Moreover, I thought the photos had a bit of both  industrial feel to it as well. As he went on with his slideshow, an image of a laundry bottle, having the background photo on it, suddenly popped up. I was surprised and felt funny because I did not expect the image would appear. Then, Barkman went on and explained what was this about. I also understand more about the relationship between nature and human nature.

After his presentation was finished, I reviewed the notes that that I took during the screening. His ideas and thoughts were very clear to me.  As I think more about it, the more stronger I felt that I agree with his idea about how our current industry uses the nature as part of their plan to attract consumers. In other words, I realized how a picture of nature can be a way for manufacturers to promote their products.  Marten Barkman answers his question,  that nature is part of human nature.  For example, when we go to markets or other stores to buy products, the printed images on some packages have photos of nature and consumers would believe that the product would be safe. I would also choose nice photographs over other plain designed package because the products with photos look nice and more believeable.  Barkman also said landscape can be used as a manufacture space.  This also reminded me how meaningful a two dimensional image can be. We all come from land, and the nature is part of human nature. Overall, I enjoyed his presentation since he had left something for me to think about. It had been successful to me because I also learned about professional artists thoughts at the same time. However, due to the limited amount of time, he rushed to finished his presentation, I wish he could have explained more about this topic.

Leslie kee is a fashion/celebrity photographer originally borned in Singapore. He moved to Japan when he was a teenager for study and graduated with a degree in photography from Tokyo Visual Arts Institute. He is now famously known for fashion and celebrity photo shoots. Leslie Kee’s comprehensive portfolio includes capturing images for GQ, Vogue, V, and Rolling Stones, and displayed his work during the Singapore Fashion Festival, March 24 to April 3, 2005. Also, one of his most controversial exhibitions in 2007. His glamorous photoshoot styles involved a lot of nudity and digital imaging. Because of this, one of his masterpiece photobook was banned from his home nation. Questions raised among the public, are some productions overrated for them?

During the exhibition in 2005, his extensive works were structured as a corridor of images of respected icons; Paris Hilton, Daniel Wu, Shu Qi, Shawn Yue, Naomi Campbell, Maggie Cheung and Quentin Tarrantino to name a few, printed in various sizes (from postcard to supersized posters). The portraits blended with one another, then also with the crowds of  the shopping mall where this humble exhibition took place. The photographs then became an interactive art installation attracting mall-goers passing through this colorful corridor to take pictures of themselves beside the images of their idols. Spectators then became a part of the exhibition, as they blended with the portraits of the celebrities. Kudos to the straightforward concept of bringing the sometimes overlooked fashion photography so much closer to the public, and in this case the visitors of the shopping mall that is filled with multinational fashion brands.

The wall closeup with Leslie Kee!~

In the year of 2007, Leslie published his superstars photobook and established many exhibitions around the world for chariety. All of the effort was dedicated to the victims of the asian tsunami diaster. However, the photobook contained too much male nudity that it got banned from Singapore. Leslie has grand ideas to break the mold of how Asians are perceived, but finds the Asian market uptight. I find it surprising and frustrating that the Asian media did not appreciate these artsy photos  and are trying to create negative publicity for his book, when it is also for a charitable cause. All profits from the sales of the book will actually go to the victims of the Asian tsunami. Leslie Kee is one of my favorite photogaphers. He knows what he is doing and the public should learn appreciate his works. I believe nudity is a form of art. Leslie has the best intentions for these superstars.

The Singing Critique

24 03 2009

I grouped with Nathalie and Mary for our DIVA group project. We came up with a lot of ideas. In the end, Nathalie suggested about the flash mob, and the group thought this would be a great piece. We used facebook and cellphone texts for communication. The three of us had alot of fun performing and seeing others having a great time as well.
So … here we go, thanks to everyone who participated in this event.

vinyl mock up

3 02 2009

It always bothers me to see so many wood based architecture in granville island. Seriously, I feel sad for the trees. So I came up with this. Even though alot of us are becoming more enviornmental friendly, there are still many waste are being produced everyday. So, I found this garbage can near the kids playground area. I hope through this little intervention can help the next generation to know/learn more about the current situation.

Somehow, I want to make mine bigger (I’m still searching for a bigger garbage can) and I think I should use another font style. The mock up will be improved for final critique. I hope it won’t be freezing next Monday.
